Effect of Temperature on Enzyme Activity

Grade 10 Life Sciences • Interactive Virtual Experiment

Learning Objective

By the end of this simulation, you should be able to explain how temperature affects enzyme activity, identify the optimum temperature, and explain why very high temperatures cause enzyme denaturation.

Scientific idea: Enzymes are biological catalysts. As temperature increases, enzyme activity generally increases because molecules move faster. However, above the optimum temperature, the enzyme's structure begins to change. At sufficiently high temperatures, the enzyme becomes denatured and loses its ability to catalyse reactions.

Instructions for Learners

  1. Use the temperature slider to select a temperature between 0°C and 70°C.
  2. Click Run Experiment.
  3. Observe the bubbles produced in the reaction tube.
  4. Read the reaction rate in bubbles per minute (bubbles/min).
  5. Record several temperatures and compare the reaction rates.
  6. Use the table and graph to identify the optimum temperature.
  7. Complete the assessment questions after exploring the simulation.

Temperature vs Enzyme Activity

The graph shows the relationship between temperature and reaction rate. Look for the temperature at which the reaction rate is highest.

Assessment

Score: 0 / 4

1. What generally happens to enzyme activity when temperature increases from a low temperature towards the optimum?

2. What is meant by the optimum temperature of an enzyme?

3. What happens to enzyme activity when the temperature rises above the optimum temperature?

4. Why does very high temperature cause enzyme denaturation?

CAPS Curriculum Connection

This simulation supports Grade 10 Life Sciences learning about enzymes and factors affecting enzyme activity. Learners use an investigation to observe how temperature affects the rate of an enzyme-controlled reaction and interpret results using a data table and graph.

The activity develops scientific process skills including:
